PEGS
PEGS stands for Provide, Encourage, Gather, Support. These principles guide organizations like the Roscommon County Genealogical Society in their mission to offer education, resources, and support for genealogical research.
(P) Provide education, instruction, resources, and assistance to researchers in detecting family roots and branches. We will preserve records, disseminate information, teach the use of reference materials and the internet and provide a safe, organized, and welcoming place where the family historian can gather, learn, and share.
(E) Encourage individuals to seek, discover, and record the heritage of their families. RCGS will stimulate community interest by promoting genealogical and family research. Encouraging participation through exchanging information, providing opportunities for service, and keeping abreast of the latest technologies.
(G) Gather and preserve genealogical and historical resources. The Research and Education Center will expand its collection not only concerning Roscommon County, but also on a state, national, and international level.
(S) Support the genealogical and historical organizations of Roscommon County, and the surrounding area. Networking with other organization with the same interest and goals through collaborative efforts in seminars, classes, programs, and presentations.
HELP!
Northern Michigan has numerous genealogical and historical societies. Most of them are small and are assigned designated spaces in larger institutions. One of the factors that makes the Roscommon County Genealogical Society unique is that it has its own building. Due to the generous beneficence of Donald E. House, founding member of the Society, and the support of our landlord, Douglas Williams, we have been able to lease our building. The closest research and education facility dealing with genealogical and historical material is the Library of Michigan located in our state capitol of Lansing. For those in our area making use of the Library of Michigan is a trip of over 150 miles one way. The RCGS has been given the opportunity to purchase our location and is in the process of obtaining funds to do so. We as a Society have a vision of becoming a repository and education center for northern Michigan like the Library of Michigan is for the southern part of the state. Help us to accomplish this dream by going to our Facebook page, Roscommon County Genealogical Society and donating to the project.
